Absolutely. I also found something about how in certain parts of Europe these traditions are upheld more than in others. Like, in parts of E. Europe, we weren’t allowed into churches & even though we were forced to convert, be Baptized & take “Christian” names, we weren’t actually allowed to worship, so we kept our existing spiritual beliefs & traditions fairly undisturbed. Also, in pockets of W. Europe where Pagan traditions were held onto despite Christianity (like Saint Maries de la Mer), the local residents were more tolerant of our traditions & they flourished.

I definitely think we preserved a lot of spiritual traditions & many of us tried to integrate it into Christianity to avoid persecution in heavily Catholic regions of Europe.

It would be neat to have a revival of traditional spirituality and not feel like we have to cloak it in Christianity.

^ This is basically what I’m trying to do right now, in my own life, in addition to some of my more typical neopagan workings.

Combining workings with the Tuatha de Dannan and old traditional Romani Shaijism will be interesting, and I hope I don’t break the universe!

Was reading about that last night & how the rituals at the pilgrimage are almost identical to Kali worship rituals in India. Ronald Lee wrote some interesting stuff about the connections between a lot of Romani spirituality & Shaktism.

I actually looked into it because of what you guys were talking about the other day & seriously, a lot of Romani spiritual traditions are Hindu traditions with some Christian words attached It’s really interesting & kind of amazing, honestly.

Now, I’m curious about whether some of our folktales resemble any Hindu epics.

I picked up a book of Romani folktales (titled “gypsy folktales” of course because lol white people) that were collected by anthropologists in the ‘60’s, and this is exactly the sort of thing I’m looking for. I haven’t read it yet, but it looks like everything is presented in a very realistic and human fashion and not exoticized/otherized at all. Which would be a nice change of pace.

I think what ended up happening was that when we hit Super Catholic Level European Nations in our diaspora, a lot of our traditions got Catholicized because that’s sort of what Christianity does, and it’s always been very good at enveloping local or not-local traditions. I think it was possibly also an attempt to make ourselves more accessible (and thus less oppressed) by the gadjikane. I’m not sure it worked so well, though.
